Serpent of the Nile was released in to serve as a replacement for it. Serpent of the Nile explores the history of Oriental dance centered around the pervasive theme of women using dance as a tool of sexual power. The book sets the stage with a page introduction, which summarizes much of the direction the rest of the book will take.

This is a beautiful, wonderful book. But as an actual history of "oriental" dance it lacks nuance and complexity, which is partly due to limited evidence and the author's romantic attachment to the women-centered mythology about this dance.
